What does Sikhi say about same-sex relationships and same-sex marriage?

Guidance from Gurbani

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

This is indeed one of the most sincerely asked questions within our global Sikh diaspora. When we turn to the Guru Granth Sahib, we find that it does not directly address same-sex relationships. There is no verse that explicitly condemns homosexuality, nor is there one that specifically endorses it. However, the Sikh Rehat Maryada, which guides our communal practices, defines the Anand Karaj as a sacred ceremony for the joining of a Sikh man and a Sikh woman. Consequently, there is genuine and ongoing discussion within the Sikh community regarding this matter. While the Guru Granth Sahib does not condemn same-sex love, the Rehat Maryada, in its current form, does not make provisions for same-sex Anand Karaj.
